I had the privilege of taking him to a hockey game, where we got the Royal treatment in the box, and then a Vancouver's bums rush on curbside waiting for a handicab. Ran into Mr. Northey and Bentall though, so all was good. Next day, enjoyed my first facial and a steak and martini lunch at Hy's with the Hardstock steering committee. We had two important visitors from NY- Dr. Chang and Mr. Hard. Ok, maybe he isn't a doctor, but he can operate.Sampled the Bushnog at Harding house on Boxing Day, and was caught out playing Scrabble with the Maggot, Manny and the Mrs and little Alexandra. Icer and Drowners. And 2009? Happy Hardstock!

Holy Hardstock!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen

The Return of the Spirit of Hardstock

as we present:

Holy Hardstock!!!

An Evening of Music and Inspiration for Scott Harding at Christ Church Cathedral

corner of Burrard and Georgia

Featuring:The Jazzmanian Devils

Jim Byrnes

Simon Kendall

Something about Reptiles

John Korsrud's Latin Jazz Quartet

Brian W. Scott will continue is rehab work at Beth Abe for the next phase of his recovery. This happened this past Monday, and all details of Scotty's new location and how to get there or stay in contact will be sent out in a subsequent notice. Christine accompanied Scott in the ambulance, along with all the bags of letters and photos and pictures and cd's. Leif followed in the Pontiac. Scott was resettled timely, and met with all the new care givers. They all seemed excited to have a musician in their midst, and Scott has already made new friends.
Visiting hours are 10 am to 10 pm, and Beth Abe is visitor friendly. It was the location Scott was hoping for. It's got lots of big trees all over the place, and it's near the Botanical Gardens, Bronx Zoo, Fordham University, and Bronx neighborhoods are all around with tons of soul. You can get there by the #2 express subway. More details will follow shortly.
Leif.

<img width='1' height='1' We will be posting the full story here in the coming days, but we can tell everyone that the Hardstock 08 concert at the Commodore Ballroom on April 25 was a success of epic proportions.
We rocked it old school, and the love in the room was so good you could taste it. My personal thanks to each and every musician who volunteered their time and talent- you were all incredible and unbelievable. From the opening introduction by Mayor Sam Sullivan- who told the crowd of his own journey from being a musicians to being the Mayor. He told us that unlike Scott, he was not a very good musician, so he went into the only path available for him- politics. It got a good laugh, and that is all a big part of the healing.
The Mike Webster Band roared off the top with their kick-ass music, followed by Swank, who came out the shoot with all guns ablazing. The most wonderful and dear friend Jim Cummins aka I Braineater has reinvented himself once again, and I can say, this is the best batch yet.
I Braineater will be appearing June 13 at the Hard Love show at Christ Church Cathedral, along with Jazzmanian Devils and many more to raise more money, love, and spirits. Go Four 3? Go Hard or Go home. Roxanne sang her heart out on Just another Day and Roxy roller, Gord and Steve were transplendent in their NVan finest, and drums beat us into submission. We are not worthy......Just before they launched into Roxy, I said to someone in the Crowd, Roxy roller. Then they started playing it. She turns to me- do you have a private line going on here>
Next up was the Furies. Does Chris Arnett ever age? Unf***ingbelievable!! Next up was the wonderful Kinnie Starr who sang some songs of healing backed only by her guitar and her beautiful voice. There were many stars that night, but only one Kinnie Starr.
The Hard Rock Miners- whooooah Nellie. Once again, rocking it Robsonstrasse style, busking inthe big time. Love each and every one of them. Bughouse 5? Butch and Joe and all the guys are some of the most loving and solid people I know. Their music? Sooooogood. I hope they all got home allright!
What can I say about John Mann and his son Harlan? John- there may be a new star in the Mann family. Its hard to describe just how good this night was....mere words cannot express. I felt it...I lived it....Hardstock 08 will live on in the cells of each every body who graced that dancefloor. Speaking of Grace, Mike Harding gave a wonderful speech for his dear brother Scott, you could feel the love there BIG TIME. Mike also was responsible for the slide show that helped all their remember why we were there and why it is so important to raise money to help one of the great ones- Scotty Hard. Jazzmanian Devils- well you know I am biased, but we kicked it. You could smell the horns a block away. Scotty Otty Otty Hard- Go Hard Go Hard!
A beautiful young woman came up to me backstage to say how much she loved it. "But who is this Scotty? We were thinking that maybe the Scotty is all of us" Truer words were never spoken. My good friend Nick Jones and the Pointed Sticks- I can't get their songs out of my head- Now she's in command of my heart.....Somebody's Mom, What do you want me do????
and finally the Hard Ones. God Bless You Craig Northey and Colin Nairne for all your hard work and help. Craig had everyone sign a beautiful brand new gold guitar which we are auctioning off. Barney, Paul Hyde, Colin James, 54/40's Neil,Brad,Dave and Dave "Rave" Ogilvie- Baby Ran she ran away- why she ran, I got to say......Wait what is this???? Ra McGuire and Smitty and Ra's song Connor up to close the evening along with Tom Harrison with Troopers Raise a Little Hell.
Well we raise a little cash and we raised a little hell, and now everybody do the Scotty Hard yell: Scotty Otty Otty Hard. Go Hard Go Hard. Hard e Hard e Hard e Ho. Go Hard Go Hard.
Go Hard or go home.
Next up will be a special evening of inspiration at Christ Church Cathedral on June 13 called HardLove- Hardstock 08.2.
more details to follow.....
Dennis

Dave "Rave" Ogilvie in the House- the latest Hard One

Dave "Rave" Ogilvie started his recording career in Vancouver working as an engineer at Mushroom Studios. His first production was the critically acclaimed "Green Record" for 54-40, and soon after Dave was producing and mixing albums for a number of Canadian artists including The Grapes Of Wrath, Moev and The Doughboys.
Ultimately it was Dave's production work with “industrial” pioneers Skinny Puppy that earned him international recognition. Dave was often considered the band's fourth member, co-writing and playing guitar in addition to his production duties. He produced, engineered and mixed nine critically acclaimed albums and ten 12" singles for the band, breaking new ground in the industrial genre.
Dave's ability to fuse Skinny Puppy’s signature sound of industrial, goth and electronic music brought him to the attention of Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails with whom he’s worked since 1994’s “March Of The Pigs” singles remix album. After forming his own label, Nothing Records, Trent selected Dave to co-produce Marilyn Manson's “Antichrist Superstar” which sold over one million copies.
Dave has gone on to produce, mix and/or re-mix tracks for such artists as David Bowie, Orgy,Motley Crue, Spineshank, Skindive, Love Inc., Serial Joe, Copyright, Sloan and N.E.R.D.
P=producedE=engineeredM=mixed R=remixed
Selected PRODUCTION / MIX credits
- 16mm - forthcoming album (P)- The Birthday Massacre - Walking With Strangers (Metropolis) (P-M) #4 on Canada's New Alternative Artist chart #10 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart- Alexz Johnson - Instant Star, Vol. 2 (Orange) (CP-E-M)- Sloan - "All Used Up" and "Try To Make It" from forthcoming greatest hits album (BMG) (M)- Jakalope - It Dreams (Orange) (P-E-M)- Lindy - Suspension of Disbelief (M)- Nine Inch Nails - tracks from And All That Could Have Been (Nothing) (M)- Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile (Nothing/Interscope) (E)- Nine Inch Nails - You Are The Perfect Drug from the “Lost Highway” soundtrack (E)- Nine Inch Nails - “Heresy: Blind” (from “Closer To God”) (Nothing/Interscope (R)- Nine Inch Nails - “Reptillian” (Nothing/Interscope) (R)- Nine Inch Nails - “Starfuckers Inc.” (Nothing/Interscope) (R)- Nine Inch Nails - “Underneath The Skin” (from “March Of The Pigs”) (Nothing/Interscope (R)- N.E.R.D. - Lapdance (Virgin) (R)- Marilyn Manson - Anti-Christ Superstar (Nothing/Interscope) (CP-E) Co-produced with Trent Reznor - Platinum- Marilyn Manson - “Dopehat” & “Organ Grinder” (Nothing/Interscope) (R)- Orgy - Candy Ass (Warner/Reprise) (M)- Orgy - Vapour Transmission (Warner/Reprise) (M)- David Bowie - “Hearts Filthy Lesson” (Virgin) (R) (w/Trent Reznor)- David Bowie/NIN/Ice Cube - “I’m Afraid Of Americans” (Virgin) (R) (w/NIN)- Coal Chamber - 3 songs from Chamber Music (Roadrunner) (M)- Coal Chamber (w/Ozzy Osbourne) - “Shock The Monkey” (Roadrunner) (R)- Motley Crue - Generation Swine (Elektra) (M)- Motley Crue - “Hooligans Holiday” (Elektra) (R)- Puff Daddy - “Victory” (Bad Boy) (R)- Tool - “Stinkfist” & “46 or 2” (Zoo) (R)- 16 Volt - Wisdom (Reconstruction) (E-M)- 54 40 - Fight For Love (Warner/Reprise) (P)- 54-40 - 2 songs from Set The Fire (Mo Da Mu) (P-E-M)- 54-40 - The Green Record (Warner/Reprise) (P-E)- Skinny Puppy - Ain’t It Dead Yet (Nettwerk) (M)- Skinny Puppy - Brap (Nettwerk) (M)- Skinny Puppy - Mind T.P.I. Morgani is also a DJ. He is making an exclusive dj mix using an assortment of Scotty Hard's productions and tracks he engineered. There will be a limited Hardstock edition of 100 copies (CD-R) with cover art.

Morgan Tanner:
This will be an eclectic blend of sounds representing just some of the work Scott has done for the musical community. My background as a dj started when my dad had me on his local cable show 'nite dreems' and then on coast 1040 and more recently with CiTR where i produced my own show. For the past 10 years or so, have followed Scotty's work as i became interested in the people behind the boards. I think such a mix would be a great addition to this benefit and would show folks that Scott has helped create some of their favorite rap classics.

I am proposing to create this mix, and package it and sell it at the show for $20 with all the money going to Scott.

This situation is also one i feel passionate about as I am a community support worker for people with disabilities. My main client is an artist who was in a taxi accident and was paralyzed and is working towards walking again. So i know how support really helps folks rehabilitate. I am planning to bring the man i support who is in a wheelchair to the gig on friday.

Jfr ( my client) was in a taxi accident 15 years ago in Japan where he lived for 14 years as an artist( similar situation to Scotty) Jfr however has a brain injury but he is an example of how people do amazing things, Jfr is expected to be able to walk again sometime in the near future as a result of his rehab training.

Jaime Clay has helped out a lot on the cd and donated the blank CDs (just the right ones i was looking all over for) Each Cd will have a unique cover artwork and will be hand numbered.
morgan tanner

The Hardstock Manifesto

We have three goals to achieve.

1. Raise money for Scotty Hard.

Because he needs us to help him.

Because we can.

Because failure is not an option.

If we bring our passion to anything, we will succeed. There is no other way it can turn out.

2. To raise awareness for how fortunate we are, as Canadians, to have a public health system.

With all its faults, we must honour and treasure what we have, never failing to build upon it. To be in the position of 47 million Americans who have no health insurance, like Scott, is unacceptable, uncivilized, and very un-Canadian.

3. To show the true Hardstock character and authenticity that makes us all what we are. Life brings us many challenges; together, we can always overcome. That does not mean the problems go away. That does not mean that someone like Scott will walk again. What it means is that we will never stop trying, and we will ask ourselves each day- is there something more I could be doing? Then do it.

Hardstock 08 has brought out a wave of love and support for a guy who is a number one class act. Many people have been inspired to give and give generously. Many people have been inspired to offer their talents and vision to this project. Keep in mind this is not a one off thing. More concerts are planned and will be announced in the coming weeks.

You will not believe the energy that will be in the room on April 25. The room is large and getting larger. The room is warm and getting warmer. Are we getting close yet? Can you feel the heat?

Just added: Kinnie Starr!!!!!

We have added Kinnie Starr to the lineup.

" my name is kinnie starr and scott harding is a man who has helped me immeasurably over the years in NYC by putting up my stinky bandmates even without barely knowing them, and showing up at my gigs no matter where they are, and making me laugh no matter how bad i felt. i would like to get on this bill, and play a few songs .... i don't know if that is possible... but i would like to be involved, and just show up easy with a guitar and no bandmates.so if you need a stressfree in betweener, i am there. either way i will be there.

love.kinnie starr

BIO: from www.kinniestarr.comThe Kinnie Starr you already know: MC-singer-poet-actress-beatnik - musicmaker - who was born in Calgary, became her adult self in Vancouver, and was raised on heavy doses of Zeppelin, Sade and De La Soul's Daisy Age.... Discovered she could kick it live one night in NYC (1993), when an open mic called, and the crowd carried her through three blazing encores ("edgy... enchanting," said the New Yorker).... Tidy (Canada 1996; U.S.A. 1997) was the first of Starr's four records - her new one is called Anything, but we'll get there in a minute - which drew critical acclaim from all corners."An artistic, feminist, angry, well-articulated rant of the highest order," said allmusic.com; "raw, funny and definitely an original," added the Globe and Mail.... Kinnie was a lead player in the alt-indie film Down and Out with the Dolls (filmed in 2001), directed by Kurt Voss (of Sugar Town fame).... Two years later, she lived and worked in Las Vegas, singing for Zumanity, Cirque du Soleil's controversial cabaret production.... and she found a new, comfortable home at MapleMusic Recordings releasing Sun Again in 2003- plus a publishing deal with Last Gang Publishing and their partner company Olé, …the same year Kinnie earned a Juno nomination for Best New Artist.... Also in 2003, Starr co-wrote Carmen Rizzo's Beso, a song for the soundtrack of the acclaimed film Thirteen... In 2004, U.K. production wizards Hybrid and Blackwatch cut body-rocking club remixes of Starr's song Alright (Release Records), a Sun Again stand-out.... She performed at the 2005 National Aboriginal Achievement Awards… Kinnie has toured Japan, the U.K., the U.S.A. and Canada in the past five years - which brings us up to speed with the here and now.... "A lot of people who love hip hop love what I do, because I'm doing my own shit," she says. "I try to uphold the old-school MC mentality when I'm on stage - taking the crowd along with me, rather than just playing songs at them. That's more like a rock 'n' roll mentality, to just slam the songs out."But wait, there's more: Starr has another body of work in progress, a collection of four-track songs that she's self-producing on a well-used, much-loved Tascam 564. "They're quite sparse, sort of Joni Mitchell-ish, but they're not really folk songs, they're tipped towards jazz and old-school Motown ballads." She has twenty songs in progress, and hopes to release ten - when they're ready.... Kinnie has started writing for the native publication Spirit Magazine, and recently interviewed Daniel Lanois for its upcoming spring issue.... "I write a lot, and very quickly these days, off the seat of my pants," she adds. "If I'm driving I'll pull over, or I'll take my sketchbook out and put in on my lap while I drive if I can't pull over."

From her myspace page:http://www.myspace.com/kinniestarr Sounds Like sade greets neil young while kissing plug one on the lips and listening to outkast ... who just HAPPENED to be thinking about debbie harry

Other blogs of interest

Visit http://www.workhardprayhardscottyhard.org/

You will see the full story from Leif Arntzen in NY of the Hardings arrival in NY. That is Russ and Shirley, Scott's parents, who are there visiting their son for the first time since the fateful day in February.

Hardstock 08 news: We have some very special guests who will definitely surprise you. This concert has touched the hearts and imaginations of so many people. It is no wonder, given the authentic Hardstock character that Canadians have shown in rallying to support one of our own. He may be living in NY, but make no mistake about it, Scotty Hard is true North Strong and Free.

I am hearing of very big names in the Vancouver entertainment industry calling up, asking where to send the cheques to help. I have sons and daughters of cultural icons volunteering to help by making tshirts and mixes, and the offers of love and support are simply overwhelming at times. Friends from Toronto are coming in for the night.

Last night, the Jazzmanian Devils rehearsed for the first time in 4 years. We were on 'hiatus', which sounds like something old guys get when they work out too hard. Actually, it was like riding a bike. Like Lance Armstrong riding a bike. Up a hill. On Viagra.

Hardstock- don't be left outside. This super group has been specially formed for the Hardstock 08 event at the Commodore. The Hard Ones include Barney Bentall and Colin Nairne from Barney Bentall and the Legendary Hearts; Colin James ( blues guitar superstar); Paul Hyde (from the Payola$, and Rock and Hyde); Simon Kendall (from Doug and the Slugs); and Doug Elliot and Pat Steward(ex-Bryan Adams) from the New Odds.

Did I forget someone? Yes I did. The Hardest Hard One, Mr. Craig Northey- the man with the largest.......(drumroll).....rolodex in Canadian Pop Music. Mr. Northey spoke with me a few weeks ago, and said the New Odds were unable to perform, as Murray was away. We talked, cajoled and plotted, and the result was the birth of a supergroup, made up from the friends of Craig Northey.

We judge a man by the company he keeps, and Mr. Northey keeps some pretty stellar company. More important here, Scott Harding aka Scotty Hard, works the biggest room these days, and his contacts and friends are legendary as well. There is no end of love for the man.

Now we have even more to offer with the addition of Neil Osborne and Dave Genn from the band 54/40, who will also join the Hard Ones. There may be others who have yet to confirm at this point, but any way you look at it, Hardstock 08 will be the concert event of the last 3 decades, and maybe decades to come.

Be a part of history; don't be left outside on the night of the show, wishing you had bought your tickets.

The Legendaly Pointed Sticks

The Pointed Sticks were formed in 1978 by vocalist Nick Jones, guitarist Bill Napier-Hemy, bassist Tony Bardach and drummer Ian Tiles; keyboard player Gord Nicholl joined later. They disbanded the following year.
The band reformed after a hiatus of twenty-five years to play shows in Japan. Legendaly for their goodwill and honour and desire to help out a friend in need. The Pointed Sticks singer Nick Jones contacted me back at the beginning of March and said whatever we can do to help, let me know. Hardstock 08 would not be happening without Nick Jones and the Pointed Sticks support. Its really that simple. Special thanks to Vancouver's original punk rocker, Gerry Barad.

Jazzmanian Devils

Founded in November of 1983, (by Dennis Mills and Scott Harding -Hey isn't he the guy we are doing this benefit for????) The Jazzmanian Devils are involved in ritual jazz sacrifice and swing/jump and jive. The jazz is sometimes sacrificed in the interests of alcohol; the alcohol is rarely sacrificed in the interests of jazz.
In 2004, The Jazzmanian Devils celebrated 20 years, and then Mayor of Vancouver Larry Campbell declared an official Jazzmanian Devils Appreciation Day in their honour.

Since that time they have been on hiatus. Get me a Young Jazzmanian Devils.
Step 5. Who are the Jazzmanian Devils?(repeat as many times as possible)

Who are the Jazzmanian Devils? The greatest invention of the 20th Century was re-invention. A sea of possibiliites. A new hat.. a new name..a new band...a new game. The opportunity of re-invention. Unable to keep his demons internal, a young man screams upon the scene, jumping backwards off a stage at the Smilin' Buddha with a punk version of The Count Fives Psychotic Reaction. Fast Forward five years later.. the time is 1984. A young man envisions a new music that feeds off the primary influence of his generation- Television. A new music not born of anger, but of humor and romance. He flips the dial and stops on style.Get me the Jazzmanian Devils! The desire for new sounds leads the young man back in time. Louis Jordan replaces Louie-Louie, jump informs jazz with the beat that became rock and roll. His latest invention is a re-invention of the White Negro, the Eternal Hipster, The Swinger Redux in Tux. After years of searching for the ultimate in individual expression, taking it OUT for the IN CROWD, the young man finds inspiration in a past he never knew. Behind the snarl, a traditionalist emerges.Get Me a Jazzmanian Devil TypeIf the highest form of flattery is imitation, the highest form of imitation is self-imitation. Re-invention is the greatest invention of the 21st Century. From the beginning the style was suits, ties, looking sharp, talking loud, living large. There was never enough past to uncover, songs to cover, drinks to drink, women to love. He was warned. the lessons of the past must be relearned, every generation. Connect the dots from bathtub gin to Warehouse parties, Swing to Swingers, Jump to Vegas, Rat Pack to pack rats, James Brown to White Boys down on their knees, disco to ....well, disco. Some things never change.Get Me the Young Jazzmanian Devils! The Man who Dared to Imitate Television. A copy of a copy. Were imitations spawned? Yes. Were more youth intoxicated and indoctrinated inthe cursed lifestyle? Yes. Was he shocked? No. Did the imitators proceed down the trails he had blazed? Yes. Was he upset? No. How could he be upset at someone imitating what he himself had imitated? Along the way, so many good times. So many friends, singers, drummers, horn players, exits stage left. Vancouver's first and only Live Late Night Tallk Show, Les Goodman After Dark. Their music could be best described as eclectic. As they moved to gigs at Vancouver venues, their instrumentation included acoustic and electric guitars, and washboard amongst others. Their musical stylings with this essentially electrified bluegrass lineup included 'Pistol Packin' Mama', the Brothers Johnson's 'Get The Funk Out of My Face', Nancy Sinatra's 'These Boots Were Made For Walkin' and speedy punked up versions of other country and western, funk, punk, and pop classics. They were a band with a sense of humour par excellence. At the time, a definite must see for those who enjoy a party atmosphere.
The band was formed in 1987 by Michael Phillips, Scooter Johnson, Oliver Metson, Ingrid Mary Percy, and Michael Turner. Turner later became an author, penning the books Hard Core Logo, American Whiskey Bar and The Pornographer's Poem.
Turner and Percy left the band in 1993, but the band has soldiered on with a mildly fluxuating membership ever since. What more can I say? I was lucky enough to grab his mike one night and jump off the stage of the Smilin' Buddha backwards after screaming the immortal scream of the undead during the Shades (post Furies) gig and version of Psychotic Reaction. In those days, they caught you.

Today, the crowd would part....like the red seas, or Charles Heston's lips. Maggots crowding old man teeth, tongue distended, NRA,NRA,NRA.

I digress. Taylor Little is the coolest drummer of all time. Props are due. You will see him in Bughouse 5 too, bringing the punk/rockabilly esthethic full circle. Chris Arnett does a mean devils head folk art too. John Werner....I'll let their myspace bio confirm:

About The Furies:
Western Canada's first punk band, The Furies, formed in early 1977 and broke up by the fall of 1977.
In the mid-seventies, a stagnant music scene afflicted Vancouver and the Western world in general. Music sucked. Musicians sucked. The potential of the sixties’ cultural revolution became a complacent “seventies” manipulated by big business. Music was big business. Things could be different. By doing what needed to be done we could change the way music was being made and thus, change the world. In the spring of 1977 Chris Arnett (guitar, vocals) joined high school friend Malcolm Hasman (bass guitar, vocals) and Jim Walker, from Alberta, to form the Furies.

Interjection: Jim Walker went on to be the first drummer in PIL.

The Furies played their first gig in May 1977 at an opening for artist Richard Hambleton at Pumps, an art/performance/living space on Powell Street in Gastown. The Vancouver nightclub/music establishment was not receptive to the sound and it was difficult to find gigs. The Furies played Battle of the Bands competitions at the Blue Horizon Hotel on Robson Street, East Vancouver house parties, appeared on the Vancouver Show and, in June 1977, made a two-song demo at North Vancouver’s Ocean Sounds, the first “punk” recording in Western Canada.
On July 30, with the help of many friends, the Furies headlined a “Punk Rock Saturday Night” at the Japanese Hall on Alexander Street in the Downtown East Side. 400 showed up. The all-female Dishrags, three 16 year olds from Vancouver Island, opened the show.
In August, Malcolm was replaced by Jim’s friend, John Werner, in time for a gig at Seattle’s Odd Fellow’s Hall in mid-August. A televised appearance at the Pacific National Exhibition followed and, on September 3, the Furies headlined another packed show at the Japanese Hall, with Seattle’s Lewd and Burnaby’s Skulls, replacing a cancelled Seattle act, the Feelings, to open the show.
The Furies broke up September 11, 1977 and the local scene floundered. Jim and John moved to the UK where Jim was recruited by Public Image Ltd. for their first album (check out PIL's 1978 "Public Image" video), and then eventually joined John in The Pack. This kid saw comic books collide with canvas at an early age. Jim Cummins ( aka I, Braineater, to the world at large) lived a life full of cartoons, rock n' roll and kicks. He made art of this comic book life. And he still does. The spirit of Braineater has always been the juice and verve of a larger than life pop parody. His music, films, artwork and performances are as entertaining as a Merry Melody cartoon, and just as amazing. Like the best pop artists, say. Lichtenstein, Warhol, Oldenburg, Big Daddy Roth or R.Crumb---Jim Cummins has made the common extraordinairy."

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.hardstockforscottyhard.org/2008/04/eat-brains-i-braineater-i-hardstock-i.html' title='Eat Brains!!! Go Four 3 (Roxanne, Steve, Gord and Rob, the original drummer) will be playing together for the first time since 1988 as part of a benefit concert at the Commodore Ballroom on Friday April 25th.

"Originally called The Debutantes, Go Four 3 (an airforce term meaning 'landing on an aircraft carrier': on scope, on target, perfect landing) formed in Vancouver in 1983 and became a staple of that city's live scene when they were discovered in 1985 by Zulu Records. Their six song self-titled EP in 1985 was produced by Rob Obvious with pre-production work by Greg Reely and Ric Arboit. Original drummer Ian Noble left soon after to be replaced by "Ike". The EP sold 1500 copies and went Top-5 on most campus radio stations across Canada. Following their 5th cross Canada tour they recorded their 1987 follow-up LP 'Six Friends' for Zulu." Performances included two headline shows at the renowned Kilkenny Rhythm n Roots Festival.

Live, the band performs truly original songs with high-octane, foot stomping barroom belligerence.
The five members of Swank – Paul Addington (Electric/Acoustic Guitars/Vocals), Phil Addington (Bass/Vocals), Kirk Douglas (Drums/Percussion/ Vocals/Guitar/Dobro), Doug Liddle (Electric/Acoustic Guitars, Slide and Steel Guitar/Banjo/Vocals) and Spencer McKinnon (Lead Vocals/Harmonica) – have opened and headlined countless shows to an ever growing fan base in Western Canada.

http://www.iwantswank.com/

http://www.myspace.com/iwantswank

Profile: Mike Webster and band Hardstock 08

For Immediate Release – All Media

Mike Webster : New Album Release
Available on iTunes

“ Mike Webster’s songs are an almost perfect marriage of classic Les Paul guitar grind and the holy country music trinity of sin , suffering and booze , relayed with a gutters edge worldview worthy of noir masters Jim Thompson and James Ellroy. If there is someone better in North America working this turf I haven’t heard them.” - John Armstrong/The Vancouver Sun –

“ I wasn’t born this way / I was made”…
Steering Wheel Confession by Mike Webster

Mike Webster came by his acquaintance with the seamier side of show business and life in general honestly. Born in Canada but raised on the road in the American Southland while the family fallowed his father on the pro wrestling circuits, young Mike was witness to the fixes, hustles and outright scams of “ rasslin” and the even shadier moonlighting jobs many of the athletes worked.

“These guys made maybe 15,000 a year tops but they all drove brand-new Cadillac’s,” Mike says, “so it was pretty clear something else was going on.” Ask him if he can be more specific and he adds , “debt collection, strong-arm work and (with a wry smile and lifted eyebrow) sales.” This education came with a soundtrack, delivered via the AM radio in his fathers Impala SS as it followed the state highways and routes through Florida, Georgia, Texas and other mythic locations.

“They had these strange country and pop hybrid stations down there and the playlists would switch from hardcore country and western to soul and rock with every song so you might hear CCR then Johnny Cash followed by Otis Redding and The Stones. I think some of the radio stations were actually down in Mexico. And it was the late 70’s so there was a lot of pure crap in there too.”

Those eclectic playlists and hundreds of hours spent listening to them from the backseat helped form a strong sense of “ what the good shit was and what was just shit” in Mike’s mind… What that boiled down to , he says , is his own version of the great songwriter Harlan Howard’s dictum that “ country music is three cords and the truth.” Webster just plays those three cords a little harder, louder and faster than Mr. Howard might have figured on.

Artists and audiences somewhat more contemporary than Ol’ Harlan would surely get it though- Webster’s songs sit squarely in the outlaw tradition of popular music, weather the outlaw is Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer, Steve Earle or Social Distortion’s Mike Ness.

The local press has already weighed in with much the same verdict: The Georgia Straight’s John Lucas pegged Webster as “one to watch” after the release of his debut CD Podunk in 2002 and The Vancouver Sun’s John Armstrong called him “ part of an honorable punk-outsider continuum that stretches from Hank Williams to Johnny Thunders and Charles Bukowski.”

His colleagues in the West Coast independent music community seem to agree as well.
In 2004 Webster was invited to participate in a recording project ( Escovedo 101) to help the legendary Texas singer songwriter Alejandro Escovedo with medical bills resulting from
Hepatitis C treatment, and Webster’s version of Escovedo’s I Was Drunk appeared alongside heavyweights Herald Nix, Ray Condo, Linda McRae, Kevin Kane and members of Blue Rodeo. This culminated with Webster being invited to headline one of the benefit shows at The Railway Club. A nice vote of confidence by the organizers of Escovedo 101. With his debut CD (Podunk) and Escovedo 101 under his belt Webster is ready and anxious to release Steering Wheel Confession. This time Webster assembled a Rock and Roll band of Roots and Punk Rock veterans to flesh out his songs.

“ I just want to be part of that tradition of musicians whose work I respect and admire as being the real thing, no matter what genre they might be lumped into. There’s a few things I can write knowledgeably about and sing with conviction and that’s what I’m going to keep doing. So far it working out.”

Media Inquiries and Bookings: mwebster11@shaw.ca
604 916 7558

Welcome to Hardstock- the Benefit for Scotty Hard

HARDSTOCK 08 is a benefit for Scott Harding aka Scotty Hard, a musician and record producer who has worked with many of the great musicians in Vancouver BC Canada and NYC where he lives.

Feb 15 2008 Scott was involved in a hit and run accident in NYC that has left him paralyzed and unable to walk. As a working musician, Scott did not have health insurance- like 47 million other Americans. Needless to say, considerable funds will need to be raised to help Scott with medical bills, his recovery, rehabilitation and future life.

The show's date is April 25 and features Vancouver's most incredible musicians from the last 30 years. The line up is a literal who's who of the Vancouver music scene.

This will be a no-comp event (NO GUEST LIST) and will sell out quickly.
